Looking From Afar

19/2/2017

In my previous post, I wrote about the macroscopic work that I do. Whilst this is without doubt one of my favourite types of photography and, 9 times out of 10, you'll find me with a macro-capable lens attached to the front of my camera, it is also not the only type of photography that I both do and enjoy. As such, this post will take a sample of some of the landscape photography that I have done.

London by Night - London, UK

Picture
Not all good photos have to be taken on a big camera. This photo of London was taken on my Android phone, for example. My brother, father and I had been left in the house alone and were getting restless, deciding to take the tube into London for an evenings explorations. We ate, drank and generally froze our way through the city however, as it was rather spur-of-the-moment, I'd left my camera back at the house. As a result, I was left with my phone, taking this picture of St Pauls Cathedral and the River Thames, showing that a phone can be a photographers best friend.

Golden Gate Bridge - San Francisco, USA

When I'm on my travels, I often stop and look around. On a particularly foggy day in San Francisco, I found myself close to the Golden Gate Bridge and saw an opportunity to get a shot of the iconic bridge disappearing into the fog. The resulting image was this shot and, whilst it isn't perfect (I would have liked to get a more attractive white balance or to have found a more creative composition), it is still one of my favourite shots. Often with landscape photography it is important to seize opportunities like these to the best of your abilities and simply doing your best and enjoying the results.

Nanaimo Bay - Nanaimo, Canada

Picture
In Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, I wanted to experiment with long exposures. When sitting on the balcony in the evenings I noticed that the ferry to Vancouver City frequently passed across the scene in front of me and, though the scene was relatively plain otherwise, thought that a cool stripe of light from the ferry would be an attractive addition and be something I hadn't tried before. This image is the result, with the lights from the ferry streaking across the landscape. It took many attempts, guessing at exposure times and apertures, but eventually my perseverance paid off and I got this photo.
